It was 40 years ago tonight: I was 19, just graduated from Brown Institute and looking for my first radio job. A friend called and said “We’re going downtown to First Avenue. Prince is gonna be there. Come with us!”
I was going to go…until I found out the tickets were $25. That was pretty spendy for 1983. Because I would be moving out on my own soon, I needed to save my money. I stayed home.
Less than a year later, the rest of the world heard the new songs which Prince performed for the first time that night: the music from “Purple Rain.” Let’s Go Crazy, Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I’m a Star, and Purple Rain were all on the set list.
