Just got the news that Shane Finch has passed away. We never worked together, but he did nights on Q102 Des Moines at a time when that station was extremely popular in Fort Dodge. In fact, Q102 was a significant factor in 94 KKEZ becoming Z94. If that hadn’t happened, Jim Davis would never have been hired as Program Director. Which of course means that I never would have worked there.
Shane was my competition. I’d roll tape on him from the newsroom and listen back after I got off the air. He was good. He made me a better jock.
Years later, we crossed paths in Ocala, Florida. He was Program Director at WTRS, a station I had worked for previously. By this time, I was in Orlando, but we met at the funeral of a mutual friend whom we had both worked with. We’ve been friends ever since. It never ceases to amaze me what a small world radio really is.
R.I.P, sir. You will be missed.
