1974’s “Waterloo” First U.S. Hit for ABBA

By | July 28, 2012

Currently playing on this week’s American Top 40 Flashback from July, 1974: “Waterloo” by Abba. When it first came out, I had no idea they were Swedish. I assumed it was an American group, singing about their hometown of Waterloo, Iowa!

I knew where Waterloo was because I got strong nighttime reception of KXEL-AM 1540. Which by the way was an interesting radio station: nights were a strange mix of country and western music, interspersed with a preacher named Garner Ted Armstrong and his show “The World Tomorrow.” My paternal grandparents loved the guy and listened to him regularly. I was a captive audience whenever we were up at the cabin. But that’s a whole ‘nother story for another time.
